London Design Festival 2014

Last weekend myself and a few of my friends on the course travelled down to London to see some of the London Design Festival shows.

We went to TENT London on Friday, and I found this exhibition to be really interesting with a wide range of products, some more craft-based designers being exhibited, but mainly furniture / lighting / interiors products were present. I would definitely re-visit this event as all the products displayed were of high quality, and the venue was not overwhelming.

On the Saturday, we went to 100% Design. For me, this was a very commercial event where I felt a little lost due to large brands and the latest technology for the home being shown. There was a small section for 'emerging designers' that was useful for me to see. Although I enjoyed the experience, I feel for me it was the wrong place to look for inspiration for the future due to the target audience being commercial, mainly for interior or product designers looking for the latest products.

On Sunday, we visited designjunction. This was the best exhibition for inspiration for me due to the exhibitors mainly being sole traders running small craft or design based businesses. There were many products on offer here inlcuding ceramics, leather, textiles, etc., also with the lightjunction section purely for lighting. I found that the exhibitors were more open to talking about their work, and it was nice to see young faces amongst them. The setting of this event was also good, as it was nicely spacious and well ventilated.

Overall, it was lovely to see some fresh work coming through but it was also clear that the market is saturated with particular styles of certain objects. It was almost as good to see what I felt was missing from those places to help give me some ideas!
